Quiz from UPSC point of view Previous Exam questions

Q1: With reference to the Flexible Mechanisms of Kyoto Protocol, which of the following is / are correct statements?

1.Through Clean Development Mechanism(CDM),any Annex I country can invest in emission reduction projects in any other Annex I country as an alternative to reducing emissions domestically.

2.Through Joint Implementation(JI), countries can meet their domestic emission reduction targets by buying greenhouse gas reduction units from (projects in) non Annex I countries to the Kyoto protocol (mostly developing countries).

Select the correct option from the codes given below:
1. Only 1
2. Only 2
3. Both 1 and 2
4. Neither 1 nor 2

Answer

Neither 1 nor 2

The ‘flexible mechanisms’ of the Kyoto Protocol were included for the first time in the COP-6, held Bonn, Germany.

Flexible mechanisms or Kyoto Mechanisms, refer to Emissions Trading, the Clean Development Mechanism and Joint Implementation.

1.Emissions trading mechanism allows parties to the Kyoto Protocol to buy ‘Kyoto units'(emission permits for greenhouse gas) from other countries to help meet their domestic emission reduction targets.

2.Joint Implementation, any Annex I country can invest in emission reduction projects (referred to as “Joint Implementation Projects”) in any other Annex I country as an alternative to reducing emissions domestically.

3.Clean Development Mechanism (CDM)-Through the CDM, countries can meet their domestic emission reduction targets by buying greenhouse gas reduction units from (projects in) non Annex I countries to the Kyoto protocol(mostly developing countries). Non-Annex I countries have no GHG emission restrictions, but have financial incentives to develop GHG emission reduction projects to receive Certified Emission Reductions that can then be sold to Annex I countries, encouraging sustainable development.

Q2: The ‘Montreaux Record’ is a register of:

1..Invasive Alien Species and their ecological hazards outside their native environment.
2. Wetland sites under the threat of anthropogenic activities.
3. Endangered species of tropical and sub-tropical fauna.
4. Coastal cities under direct threat of consequences of global warming.

Answer: 2

Wetland sites under the threat of anthropogenic activities.

Q3).With reference to oil spills, consider the following statements :
1. They make the water deficient in oxygen.

2. They can cause algal blooms.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct ?

1) 1 only                2) 2 only                              3) Both 1 and 2   4) Neither 1 nor 2

Ans-1
Oil Spills make the water deficient in oxygen. This causes problem for the marine animals. Algal bloom is associated with eutrophication, and oil spills have no role here. On the contrary, oil spills kills algae. Spilled oil can harm the environment in several ways, including the physical damages that directly impact wildlife and their habitats (such as coating birds or mammals with a layer of oil), and the toxicity of the oil itself, which can poison exposed organisms.

Q4:.Increased level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere would impact the plants in many ways. These can be:

1. decrease in photosynthetic productivity of plants.

2. Proliferation of weeds.

3. Increase in number of insects and other pests.

Select the correct answer using the codes given below.
1) 1 and 2 only

2) 1 and 3 only

3) 2 and 3 only

4) 1, 2 and 3

Ans-3
Remember that increase in CO2 will increase photosynthesis.  Increased CO2 concentration in the atmosphere may increase photosynthetic productivity of plants. This in turn produces more organic matter. It may seem a positive effect. But, 1. Weeds may proliferate rapidly and that too at the expense of useful plants. 2. Insects and other pests that feed on plants may also increase in number. 3. Survival of other organisms gets affected.

Q5: A biofertilizer helps in increasing the supply of primary nutrients to plants. Which of the following is/are examples of biofertilizers?

1. Azotobacter

2. Rhizobium

3. Azospirillium

Select the correct answer using the codes given below.
1) 1 and 2 only                                                                               2) 1 and 3 only
3) 2 and 3 only                                                                              4) 1, 2 and 3

Ans-4
Rhizobium is used for leguminous crops. Azotobacter can be used with crops like wheat, maize, mustard, cotton, potato and other vegetable crops. Azospirillum inoculations are recommended mainly for sorghum, millets, maize, sugarcane and wheat. Bio-fertilizers add nutrients through the natural processes of nitrogen fixation, solubilizing phosphorus, and stimulating plant growth through the synthesis of growth-promoting substances.

Q6: In context of ecology, the term ‘carrying capacity’ of a species means

1) the highest amount of stress it can withstand.

2) Resources that it consumes.

3) Its population size that the environment can sustain indefinitely

4) none

Ans-3
Its population size that the environment can sustain indefinitely. The carrying capacity of a biological species in an environment is the maximum population size of the species that the environment can sustain indefinitely, given the food, habitat, water, and other necessities available in the environment

Q7: Earth Hour is organized by ___?

1. UNESCO
2. Earth Hour Foundation
3.World Wildlife Fund
4.United Nations Environment Programme

Answer: World Wildlife Fund

Earth Hour is organized by the WorldWildlife Fund (WWF). WWF is mission is to stop the degradation of the Earth’s natural environment and build a future where people live in harmony with nature.

Q8: Now a days Environmental Accounting is making news. What is Environment Accounting?

1: It is a method to measure the consumption of the environment/ natural resources

2: Its a method to statistically analyze the green areas of the country

3: Its a method of accounting in which all units are expressed in terms of loss / gain of Carbon Dioxide

4: Its a method of accounting in which all measurement is expressed in Carbon Credits

Answer: 1

It is a method to measure the consumption of the environment/ natural resources

Q9: Which of the following is / are incorrect pairs regarding classification of biodiversity?

1.Alpha diversity →Between-community diversity

2.Beta diversity → Within-Community diversity

3.Gamma diversity → Overall Biodiversity

Select the correct option from the codes given below:
1: Only 2
2: Only 3
3: 1 and 2
4: 1, 2 and 3

Answer: 1 and 2

1.Alpha-diversity (Within-Community diversity) refers to the diverse organisms sharing the same community/habitat.

2.Beta-diversity (Between-community diversity) refers to the rate of replacement of species along a gradient of habitats or communities.

3.Gamma diversity (Overall) refers to the diversity of habitats over the total landscape or geographical area.

Q10: Consider the following statements:

1. NTCA (National Tiger Conservation Authority) is a statutory body

2. The establishment of NTCA took place by an amendment of the Wildlife Protection Act

Only 1 is correct
Only 2 is correct
Both 1 & 2 are correct
Neither 1 nor 2 is correct

Answer 10: Both 1 & 2 are correct

The ‘Montreaux Record’ is a register of:
