Facts about India- History of HIV(World AIDS Day)

HIV infection in India was first detected in 1986 among female sex workers in Chennai. HIV was diagnosed by Dr. Suniti Solomon and her student Dr. Sellappan Nirmala. Today, with an estimated 5.134 million infections, India is home to the second largest population of people living with HIV and AIDS (PLHA).One in every five AIDS cases in India is in Maharashtra. 

Today is #WorldAIDSDay: - In 1987, #WHO designated #December1st as #AIDSDay - It is dedicated to raising awareness of #AIDS pandemiccaused by spread of HIV infection, & mourning those who have died of disease - AIDS 1st reported in 1981 - National AIDS Research Institute

Origin of HIV

Scientists identified a type of chimpanzee in West Africa as the source of HIV infection in humans. They believe that the chimpanzee version of the immunodeficiency virus (called simian immunodeficiency virus or SIV) most likely was transmitted to humans and mutated into HIV when humans hunted these chimpanzees for meat and came into contact with their infected blood
