The Indian AirForce (IAF) and other search teams are going through pictures and data sent by Earth Observation (EO) satellites under Cospas-SARSat to find missing An-32 transport aircraft.
COSPAS (COsmicheskaya Sisteyama Poiska Avariynich Sudov) is a Russian acronym for Space System for Search of Distress Vessels. SARSAT means Search and Rescue Satellite-Aided Tracking.
COSPAS-SARSAT is an international satellite-based search and rescue system that uses satellites to detect and locate emergency beacons carried by ships, aircraft, or individuals.
The system consists of a network of satellites, ground stations, mission control centers, and rescue coordination centers. Distress alerts are detected, located and forwarded to over 200 countries and territories at no cost to beacon owners. It was conceived and initiated by Canada, France, the United States, and the former Soviet Union in 1979. The definitive agreement of the organization was signed in 1988. It Headquarters is in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
