1. PM Narendra Modi inaugurated the International Rice Research Institute South Asia Regional Centre (IRRI SARC) in Varanasi. It is the sixth campus of IRRI SARC.
The institute will complement the government’s effort to double farmer’s income by 2022.
2. Proposal from the states of Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Mizoram, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh for the implementation of Mahila Police Volunteer at Karnal and Mahindergarh district of Haryana on a pilot basis under the Nirbhaya Fund during the financial year 2016-2017.
3. Railway minister Piyush Goel announced that the Honey Bee plan in Assam that kept elephants away from the tracks will be expanded to other areas of the country.
It is a simple device that amplifies the recorded sound of honey bees to keep elephants away from the rail track. Several mishaps had been avoided by using this method.
4. Madhya Pradesh Government has announced on December 29 that it is going to create an Adhyatmik Vibhag (spiritual department) by merging several existing departments.
5. “Finding Beauty in Garbage” has won the best short documentary award at Asia South East Short Film Festival held at Phnom Penh in Cambodia.
6. Sanjay Sethi has been appointed as the chairman of the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT).
