1) RBI to soon release new Rs 20 bank note with additional features

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will soon introduce a new Rs 20 currency note with additional features, according to a document of the central bank.
The central bank has already issued new look currency notes in the denominations of Rs 10, Rs 50, Rs 100, and Rs 500, besides introducing Rs 200 and Rs 2,000 bank notes.
The new look notes are being introduced since November 2016 under Mahatma Gandhi (New) series. These are different in size and design compared to the notes issued previously.
The currency notes, except for banned Rs 500 and Rs 1,000, issued under old series continue to remain legal tender.
According to the RBI data bank, there were 4.92 billion pieces of Rs 20 note in circulation as on March 31, 2016. The number more than doubled to about 10 billion pieces by March 2018.
The Rs 20 notes accounted for 9.8 per cent of the total number of currency notes in circulation at the end of March 2018.
Reserve Bank of India sets up panel headed by Bimal Jalan to examine its economic capital framework
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has set up an expert panel to review its existing economic capital framework that will be headed by its former governor Bimal Jalan, the central bank said on Wednesday.
This comes after government officials pressured the RBI for weeks to accede to a range of demands, from handing over surplus reserves to the government to easing of lending curbs.
Heated discussions over the revamping of the economic capital framework led to the unexpected resignation of RBI Governor Urijit Patel earlier this month.
The central bank said in a statement that former RBI Deputy Governor Rakesh Mohan would be the Vice Chairman of the committee, which would also comprise Bharat Doshi, Sudhir Mankad, Subhash Chandra Garg and N.S. Vishwanathan as members.

On December 25, 2018, on the eve of former late PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s 94th birth anniversary dubbed as ‘Good Governance Day’, Chief Minister of Haryana, Manohar Lal Khattar launched 485 schemes of 37 departments under ‘Digital Haryana’ initiative.
i. Among the schemes thus launched on the occasion, the following states a few:
the chief minister inaugurated 22 ‘Antyodya Saral Kendras’for all district headquarters from Karnal,
This made Haryana the first state to have a launch of 4,000 Atal Seva Kendras in rural areas, 22 at district headquarters, 51 at sub-divisional level and 20 Antyodya Saral Kendras at Tehsil level, simultaneously
A toll free Antyodaya Helpline number was inaugurated
A SARAL App would be launched so that people could get all information about schemes on their smart phones at home.
ii. The CM of Haryana also renamed the childcare institutes under one name of ‘Jagannath Ashram’, clubbing them because of their common goal of all-round development of the children.

On December 25, 2018, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Bogibeel bridge, India’s longest railroad bridge in Assam. Till now Vembanad rail bridge in Kerala was dubbed as the longest railway-bridge in India at 4.62km of length.
i. The 4.94 km structure was built at a cost of Rs. 5900 crores by Indian Railways.
ii. It is India’s only fully welded bridge for which european codes and welding standards were adhered to for the first time in the country.
iii. It is also Asia’s 2nd longest rail-and-road connector having a life span of 120 years.
iv. It will reduce travel time from Assam to Arunachal Pradesh to four hours and will cut out the detour of over 170 km via Tinsukia. It will also cut down train travel between Delhi and Dibrugarh by three hours.
v. Its initial budget was about Rs. 3,200 crore and had an original planned length of 4.31 km.
Physical Features:
i. It is a double-decker bridge having two railway lines on the lower deck and a three-lane road on the upper.
ii. The three road lanes of the bridge can act as three landing strips for the Air Force
iii. It has been designed like a bridge that links Sweden and Denmark.

PM Modi also flagged off a train – the Tinsukia-Naharlagun Intercity Express, which will run five days a week.
Background:
The foundation stone of the project was laid by former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda on January 22, 1997.
Its work began on April 21, 2002 under the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led government.

i. The theme for the cup was ‘An Entangled World: diplomacy, human relationships, the science of memory, and literature, art and music’.
ii. The Tournament of Champions of World Scholar’s Cup is a competition for young debaters from around the world in which only 2000 participants out of 40,000 qualified for the final of “The tournament of Champions”.
