1783 - The Revolutionary War comes to an end with the Treaty of Paris between the United States and Britain.
1833 - The first successful newspaper in the US, New York Sun, was started by Benjamin H Day.
1939 - World War II begins with British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlin declaring war on Germany and Britain against a radio broadcast.
1943 - The Allies attacked Italy during the Second World War.
1971 - Qatar becomes an independent nation.
1984 - Around 1300 were killed and hundreds were injured due to a terrible storm in South Philippines.
