1.Today *(3rd May)* is *World Press Freedom Day .*

This day marks the *anniversary of the Declaration of Windhoek*, a statement of *free press principles* put together by *African newspaper journalists in 1991.*

*Theme:_* ‘ Keeping Power in Check: Media, Justice and The Rule of Law ’

2. *Pakyong Airport (Sikkim)* is set to become *India's 100th operational airport* when it is *commissioned in June.*

*Sikkim* is the *only state* in the country *without an airport.*

3. *Union Cabinet* approved a plan to set up *20 All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS)* and *upgrade 73 medical colleges* under *Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY)* , which has been *extended by two years till 2020* with financial outlay of *Rs.14,832 crore.*

4. *India* has surpassed *France* to become
one of the *world's five largest military spenders* , according to *Swedish arms watchdog SIPRI (Stockholm International Peace Research Institute) .*

*India* spent *$63.9 billion* on its military in *2017*, an *increase of 5.5% compared with 2016.*

5. *Union Cabinet* approved *doubling the investment limit* to *₹15 lakh* under the government's flagship senior citizen pension scheme *Pradhan Mantri Vaya Vandana Yojana (PMVVY) .*

This move will enable up to *₹10,000 pension per month* for *senior citizens* based on a *guaranteed 8% annual return.*

6. *A Burson Cohn & Wolfe study* revealed that *PM Narendra Modi* is the *Most Popular World Leader on Facebook* with *over 43.2 million likes* on his *personal page.*

7.Former Australian cricketer *Justin Langer* has been appointed as *Australian cricket team's Head Coach* for *all three formats.*
